Having officially clinched their berth in the Northern Super League Playoffs following last week’s dramatic finish in Vancouver, the Montréal Roses open the final stretch of the regular season on Sunday with a visit to Halifax Tides FC at Wanderers Grounds. 

With four matches remaining before the playoffs, Montreal’s objective is clear: maintain their pace atop the table and push one step closer to securing their first Supporters’ Shield. 

The Final Stretch: Four Matches for the Title

Sitting atop the NSL standings with 39 points and an 11-4-6 record, the Roses currently hold a three-point cushion over second-place Ottawa Rapid FC. The title race is set for an intense finish, with Montreal’s remaining schedule split between two distinct matchups: two road trips to Nova Scotia to face Halifax (September 27 and October 17) and two high-stakes home clashes against Ottawa at Stade Boréale (October 2 and October 23). Every point earned from here on out will be vital in securing top seed status. 

Franchise Record and Proven Resilience

Montreal enters Sunday’s clash in peak form. Unbeaten in their last six matches, the Roses are currently enjoying the longest undefeated streak in franchise history. Their last defeat came back on August 7, against this very same Halifax squad. 

Last week’s performance in Vancouver showcased the group’s maturity and tactical composure under interim head coach Maryse Bard-Martel. Trailing deep into stoppage time, Montreal maintained their discipline and found a 93rd-minute equalizer through Evelyn Badu to rescue a valuable point on the West Coast. 

High-Powered Attack vs. Stingy Defense

Sunday’s matchup presents a compelling tactical contrast between one of the league’s most potent attacking sides and its most miserly defense.

With 40 goals scored this season and a league-best +15 goal differential, Montreal features a dynamic, multi-faceted offense. While Vancouver’s Jessica De Filippo recently moved ahead of Elyse Bennett in the Golden Boot race, Montreal’s scoring threat comes from all areas of the pitch, highlighted by recent goals from Lisa Pechersky and Evelyn Badu. 

Meanwhile, Halifax Tides FC remain exceptionally tough to break down. Tied with Toronto, Halifax boasts the joint-best defensive record in the NSL, conceding just 21 goals through 21 matches. In fact, all three prior meetings between Montreal and Halifax this season ended in tight 1-0 decisions (two wins for Montreal, one for Halifax).

However, the Nova Scotia side has struggled to generate offense, failing to score more than a single goal in a match since August 3 while being shut out three times in that span. For the Roses, the key to victory will lie in controlling tempo, managing possession, and breaking down Halifax’s low block early to control the match from the outset.
