Three points separate the Montréal Roses from the top of the Northern Super League. With nine matches left in the regular season, every result carries weight, and it is Calgary Wild FC who arrive at Stade Boréale on Sunday.
Montreal (9-4-3, 30 points) return from a successful trip to Toronto, where a 2-0 win protected their hold on second place. Anna Karpenko recorded a sixth clean sheet of the season there, the most in the NSL, and Elyse Bennett scored her ninth goal, which leaves her tied at the top of the league scoring chart with Vancouver’s Jessica De Filippo.
The opponent
On paper, everything separates the two sides. Calgary sit bottom of the table on eight points, with the league’s lowest scoring total (16 goals) and the most goals conceded (44).
But the table does not tell the whole story, and recent weeks prove it. After seven straight defeats, the Wild have turned things around with two consecutive wins, including a 4-3 result against league-leading Ottawa Rapid FC on August 15. That win, as it happens, worked in the Roses’ favour by tightening the race at the top.
Calgary’s only other points this season came against Montreal: a 2-2 draw on May 16 in Alberta, then a 1-1 result on June 21 at Stade Boréale. The Roses did win the other two meetings, 2-0 on April 25 and 2-0 on July 17.
What to watch
The race at the top. Three points separate the Roses from Ottawa, with nine matches to play. Dropped points cost more now than they did in June.
Elyse Bennett. Nine goals, tied for the lead in the NSL scoring chart. She scored in her most recent outing, in Toronto.
Anna Karpenko. Six clean sheets this season, more than any other goalkeeper in the league. Montreal have conceded 17 goals, the second-lowest total in the NSL.
A fifth chapter. The fifth and final meeting of the season between the clubs. Montreal’s record: two wins and two draws.
