The Montréal Roses complete their four-match home stretch on Sunday, welcoming Halifax Tides FC in the first meeting between the two clubs this season. Coming off a convincing 5-1 win over reigning champions Vancouver, the Roses (5-2-3, 18 points) will look to build on that result in front of their supporters. Four points separate the two sides in the table.
The last match was a turning point. Evelyn Badu scored a hat-trick, including a strike into the top corner that will rank among the goals of the season, while Elyse Bennett took her tally to seven, keeping her atop the NSL scoring chart. That’s the kind of performance the side will be looking to repeat.
The opponent
This is the first meeting of the season between the two clubs. Fourth in the table at 4-4-2 (14 points), Halifax Tides FC lean on one of the league’s stingiest defences: just nine goals conceded, the second-best mark in the NSL. Scoring has been harder to come by, with 13 goals for.
It sets up a clash of opposites: the league’s second best attack (21 goals) against its second-best defence. Halifax arrive on the back of a loss, in an up-and-down run of five (L-W-D-W-L).
It’s also a preview of the historic August 29 date, when the two clubs meet again at Stade Saputo.
What to watch
Attack against defence. The Roses have the NSL’s second-best attack (21 goals) and its third-best defence (11 conceded). Halifax have conceded just nine, the league’s second-best mark. Something has to give.
Keeping the momentum. After ending their winless run in style, the Roses have a chance to build on that result and close out their home stretch on a high.
Evelyn Badu. Three goals in a single match in her last appearance: the Ghanaian midfielder arrives full of confidence.
Meet Eve Perisset and Mimi Alidou
The Roses’ two newest signings will be on hand Sunday. They will take part in an autograph session from 3:00 to 3:30 p.m. ahead of the match, before being present to supporters at halftime.
