With six matches left in the regular season, five points separate the top three teams in the Northern Super League. The Montréal Roses lead the way on 37 points, ahead of Ottawa Rapid FC (33) and AFC Toronto (32). On Thursday night, two of them meet at Stade Boréale.
The Roses are back from the capital, where they beat Ottawa 3-2 last Sunday to stretch their lead at top to four points. A Toronto win on Thursday would cut it back to two.
The Toronto wall
AFC Toronto arrive in Laval with the best defence in the league: 18 goals conceded in 19 matches, three fewer than Montreal.
They are a hard team to beat in every sense. Nine wins, five defeats, and five draws, the most in the competition. Toronto are unbeaten in three, including a 2-1 win over Ottawa on August 30 that worked directly in the Roses’ favour. Their most recent outing, a goalless draw with Calgary Wild FC at BMO Field, cost them two points they will be looking to recover.
Over their last six matches, AFC Toronto have lost only once. That was to Montreal, on August 16, in a 2-0 Roses win at BMO Field.
Montreal, for their part, have scored 36 goals this season, the second-highest total in the league. The Roses also hold the best goal differential in the competition, at +15.
Meetings between these two clubs are rarely settled by wide margins. Three of the four this season finished within one of two goals.
What to watch
Elyse Bennett sits alone at the top of the NSL Golden Boot race with 11 goals, the most recent on Sunday in Ottawa. Facing her, AFC Toronto have two players among the league’s top five scorers: Kaylee Hunter, third with nine, and Lauren Rowe, fifth with seven.
Unfinished business at home. Toronto won the only meeting between the sides at Stade Boréale this season, on July 23. Montreal have a chance to put that right in front of their own supporters.
