The Montréal Roses hit the road on Wednesday for a fourth meeting of the season with reigning champions Vancouver Rise FC. Beaten by AFC Toronto at Stade Boréale last Thursday, the Roses (7-3-3, 24 points) return to friendlier ground: the road, where they have yet to lose this season. Kickoff is at 10 p.m. Montreal time, at Swangard Stadium.

The opponent

These two clubs know each other well. Montreal lead the season series two wins to one: a 4-0 victory on May 2, a 3-2 loss on May 30, then the emphatic 5-1 win on July 4 at Stade Boréale, headlined by Evelyn Badu’s hat-trick. Vancouver certainly haven’t forgotten that night, and this time they’re at home.

The season numbers frame a meeting of two sides that like the ball - 54% possession for Montreal, 53% for Vancouver - but do very different things with it: the Roses have attempted 154 shots, 71 on target, against 91 and 43 for the reigning champions. Montreal also outscored them on the season, 24 goals to 20. 

What to watch

Unbeaten on the road. Oddly enough, all three of the Roses’ losses this season have come at Stade Boréale. Away from home, Montreal have yet to bend: four wins, two draws. A trip to Vancouver is no gentle stop, but if there’s a place to reset, it’s the road. 

The cutting edge. Twelve shots, three on target, no goals: Thursday summed up the one genuine criticism of this team. The volume is there - 154 shots this season, tops in this series with Vancouver. What’s left is putting the ball in the net. 

Elyse Bennett and Tanya Boychuk. Seven goals for one, right behind the NSL lead; five for the other, third in the chart. Both forwards have already hurt the Rise this season. 

A fourth chapter. 11 Roses goals in three meetings with the reigning champions, five of them in the last one. These two teams have never played a dull match against each other.
