Some nights, soccer spills beyond the pitch. Friday will be one of them. The Montréal Roses host Halifax Tides FC for their Pride match, a night in the colours of the community, celebrating belonging as much as the game itself. The setting is festive, but the stakes are real: the Roses (8-3-3, 27 points) want to solidify second place and build on a hard-earned win in Vancouver.
The Roses arrive full of belief. Trailing twice on the road against the reigning champions on July 29, they answered with four goals in a 4-3 win, featuring four different scorers and two first career NSL goals. That is the kind of night that pulls a group together, and it sets the tone heading home.
The opponent
Don’t be fooled by the table. The Tides sit fourth (5-6-3, 18 points), but they are a hard-nosed side built on one of the league’s best defences: 14 goals conceded in 14 matches, a total only AFC have bettered (13). Up front, Halifax lean on a balanced trio, with Jordyn Rhodes, Julianne Vallerand and Saorla Miller each scoring four goals this season.
The clubs have only met once, on July 12 at Stade Boréale. It was a tight affair settled by a single goal: a Chloe Minas penalty in the 78th minute. Montreal controlled possession (55%), but Halifax hit back with more shots (10 to 7). In other words, nothing comes easy against this team, and Friday’s result is anything but a given.
What to watch
Elyse Bennett, top of the league. The Roses forward sits atop the NSL scoring chart with 8 goals, level with Ottawa’s DB Pridham. One telling detail: Bennett has scored her 8 in fewer minutes than her rival (1,139 to 1,235). Tanya Boychuk isn’t far behind, fifth in the league with 5.
Defence against defence. Two of the NSL’s three best defences meet here. Montréal hold the league’s second-best goal differential (+12); Halifax have conceded just 14. Chances may be rare, and precious.
The return of Chloe Minas. Suspended for the last match after her red card, the local midfielder is back, the very player who scored the winner in the first meeting with Halifax. She also sits fourth in the NSL for assists, behind teammate Lisa Pechersky.
Pride at the heart of the night. Beyond the result, this match puts the community and the club’s values of inclusion front and centre. A night to be lived in the stands as much as on the grass.
