The Montréal Roses continue their home stretch on Thursday night, welcoming Ottawa Rapid FC to Stade Boréale with plenty at stake: just one point separates the two sides at the top of the table. Second at 4-1-3 (15 points), the Roses can move ahead of league-leading Ottawa with a win. It’s the second of four straight matches at home.

Montreal arrives on the back of two draws. On Sunday, the Roses thoroughly controlled Calgary Wild FC, with 62% possession and 21 shots, but had to settle for a 1-1 result. Evelyn Badu scored her first goal in Roses colours. On Thursday, the side will be looking to turn that kind of control into three points.

The opponent

Ottawa Rapid FC come to Stade Boréale atop the Northern Super League, and the two clubs know each other well. In their first meeting of the season, on May 23 at TD Place, the Roses won 2-1 behind a first-half brace from co-captain Tanya Boychuk before holding off a strong Ottawa push after the break. It also remains the Roses’ most recent win.

Ottawa are a strong side, led by Delaney Baie Pridham, the NSL’s all-time leading scorer. The Rapid’s last meeting demanded a major defensive effort from the Roses to protect all three points, and something similar may be needed on Thursday.

What to watch

First place. A win would lift the Roses above Ottawa and into top spot, at the start of a long stretch that could shape their season.

The bench, again. Head coach Robert Rositoiu will once more be away completing his Concacaf Pro Diploma, with assistant coach Maryse Bard-Martel leading the side. After the reshuffled group’s response on Sunday, it will be worth watching which players return to the lineup.

A final match for Chaerim. Thursday will also be a chance to salute forward Chaerim Kang, who plays her final match in Roses colours before continuing her career closer to her family. Supporters are invited to give her a send-off worthy of her time here.
